walked in to a massive car accident on the m8, which was horrific, with one man dead and quite a few injured...
it was going to be a busy day...
at 10am we were already 1.5 hrs behind with the appointment patients...
had a little old lady for a virtual colonoscopy...
now for all you non medical folk,
A colonoscopy an endoscopic examination of the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the rear passage. It may provide a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected lesions. it's the only way to see what's going on in your bowels close up...
A virtual colonsoscopy is slightly less invasive and uses 2D and 3D imagery reconstructed from computed tomography (CT) scans, although it is not standard and still under investigation regarding its diagnostic abilities. It involves a small tube being passed up the rear passage and then having air pumped into your bowels in order to inflate them to show as much informations as possible... so that you're uncomfortable and feeling quite full... we then do two scans one with you laying on your front, and the next with you on your back..
It's mainly used on the elderly and frail that cannot undertake a traditional colonoscopy.
however there is one main point...
a colonoscopy is done on theatre, with you asleep, while they carryout all this...
a virtual colonoscopy has you wide a wake for the entire procedure...
which one would you prefer...

this lady we had, was 87, full of arthritis and so frail and little, we felt just horrible to be doing this... as it really is an unpleasant expericence... half end in tears...
though the funy bit came as we were adding the air to her bowels, and she comes out with...
This reminds me of a story i read in the paper, about 3 men and an air pressure hose... they did the same thing and he exploded and died...
the three of us in the room just looked at each other and had a hard time keeping a straight face, and you could hear just a trace of laughter in my voice as i told her she wasn't going to explode, and that we weren't using an air pressure hose!
i wonder what papers she's been reading!
then when she was all finished the poor thing just burst into tears...

by lunch time we were 2 hrs behind, with a paked waiting room, and patients everywhere... it's was insane with patients waiting in the department for atleast an hr to be scanned...
then we get more traumas... people jumping off bridges over the tran station, and breaking lots of bones...
see they're smart here, there's an enfored roof above, so they just splatter, they don't die...
but the people jumping don't know that...
the one today had tried many times before hand, which is sad...
But the day passed so quickly and there wasn't a dull moment to be had... the perfect day!
anyways off to celebrate Halloween...
